A significant water main rupture struck Jamaica Plain on Tuesday afternoon, inundating streets and necessitating traffic diversions around Jackson Square.
Incident Location and Initial Response
The break happened at the intersection of Columbus Avenue, Centre Street, and Ritchie Street. Repair teams and firefighters reached the scene just before 4 p.m. to address the extensive flooding. Police officers quickly redirected traffic, closing the intersection in all directions.
Impact on Public Transit
The flooding led to a temporary shutdown of the Jackson Square busway. MBTA routes 14, 22, 29, 41, and 44 faced detours to bypass the area. Orange Line train service remained unaffected.
Ongoing Repairs and Safety Measures
By 8:30 p.m., crews continued efforts to isolate the water supply and clear the streets. Officials urged the public to steer clear of the zone. The damaged 36-inch transmission main affected a wide expanse extending past Egleston Square. Workers partially isolated the main around 5:40 p.m.
Three nearby daycare centers evacuated due to rising water levels and will stay closed until the shutoff completes.
