The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) demands a detailed report within two weeks from Jharkhand’s Chief Secretary and Deoghar’s Superintendent of Police following the suspicious death of a 19-year-old woman at a remand home in Charki Pahari, Deoghar district, on May 2.
Jharkhand Remand Home Incident
The NHRC initiated suo motu action after learning of the inmate’s death under unclear circumstances. The cause remains undetermined, prompting concerns over potential human rights violations.
Staff at the remand home rushed the woman to Deoghar Sadar Hospital after her condition suddenly worsened, but she passed away during treatment.
Since January 1, 2026, five inmates have died at the facility, highlighting serious issues with security measures and healthcare provisions.
Separate Haryana Sewer Cleaning Tragedy
In a related development, the NHRC addresses the deaths of two sanitation workers on May 2 while cleaning a sewer at Puri Pranayam Society in Greater Faridabad, Haryana.
The workers entered a manhole without protective gear or gas masks, as directed by the estate manager.
The Commission views this as a grave human rights breach and has notified Faridabad’s Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Police Commissioner for a report within two weeks. The submission must detail the investigation status and compensation to the deceased workers’ families.
NHRC expresses alarm that such tragedies persist nationwide, despite Supreme Court guidelines and NHRC advisories promoting mechanized cleaning and proper safety equipment for sanitation workers.
