President Donald Trump announced that the United States anticipates a response from Iran later today regarding a proposal to resolve the ongoing West Asia conflict. He made the remarks to reporters before heading to a dinner at his golf course in Sterling, Virginia.
Trump Addresses Iran’s Timeline
When asked about Tehran’s reply to the proposal, Trump stated, “We’ll hear from them supposedly tonight.” Pressed on whether Iran is deliberately delaying the process, he responded, “We’ll find out soon enough.”
Rubio Provides Update from Rome
Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Washington expects Iran’s feedback today and hopes for a substantive proposal. Speaking to reporters in Rome during a visit to Italy and the Vatican amid transatlantic tensions, Rubio said, “We should know something today.”
He noted that no response had arrived as of the previous hour, attributing potential delays to Iran’s internal challenges. “Their system is still highly fractured, and it’s dysfunctional as well, so that may be serving as an impediment,” Rubio explained. He expressed optimism that the reply would initiate “a serious process of negotiation.”
Potential Revival of Project Freedom
Trump also discussed the possibility of revisiting an enhanced version of Project Freedom, a maritime security effort to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. “I think Project Freedom is good, but I think we have other ways of doing it also. We may go back to Project Freedom if things don’t happen, but it’d be Project Freedom plus,” he said while departing the White House.
