In a dramatic turn at Camden Yards, the New York Yankees suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night. Ryan Weathers came close to history in his first start since battling severe illness nine days earlier, but the Yankees’ bullpen faltered, leading to their fourth consecutive loss.

Weathers’ Near No-Hitter Derailed

Weathers dominated through six innings, striking out nine and walking three while keeping the Orioles off the bases. His changeup proved effective, fooling Baltimore hitters and including a streak of five straight strikeouts. Adley Rutschman ended the no-hit bid with a single to open the seventh.

One out later, Weathers walked a batter on his 101st pitch, prompting manager Aaron Boone to summon reliever Brent Headrick. The left-hander, reliable earlier this season with 14 stranded runners leading MLB, left a 1-1 slider over the plate. Coby Mayo capitalized, launching a three-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole to flip the score.

Yankees’ Offense Silenced

The Yankees, now 26-16, managed just five hits against Brandon Young and three relievers. Their lone scoring came from Ben Rice’s two-run homer in the third, his 13th of the year and opposite-field shot that snapped a 0-for-13 skid after a hand injury.

Earlier this month, New York swept Baltimore 4-0 in the Bronx, outscoring them 39-10. This time, following a weekend sweep by the Brewers, the bats went quiet again.

Rotation Battle Heats Up

Weathers impressed amid competition for a rotation spot as Gerrit Cole nears return from the injured list by month’s end. Will Warren starts Tuesday, setting up a key matchup.
