KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine ’s parliament on Tuesday handed laws that may tighten oversight of two key anti-corruption businesses, which critics say may considerably weaken their independence and provides President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s circle better sway over investigations.

Combating entrenched corruption is essential for Ukraine’s bid to affix the European Union and preserve entry to billions of {dollars} in Western help. The laws’s passage has triggered public outrage in Ukraine, and a protest was deliberate Tuesday in Kyiv.

The modifications would grant the prosecutor basic new authority over investigations and circumstances dealt with by the Nationwide Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Workplace (SAPO).
