The Freedom of the Press Basis has filed a disciplinary criticism letter in opposition to Brendan Carr, accusing the Federal Communications Fee chair of violating authorized ethics guidelines in what the nonprofit watchdog describes as a politically motivated marketing campaign to strain information organizations and profit President Trump.
In a letter submitted Monday evening to the District of Columbia Bar’s disciplinary council and obtained by Oliver Darcy’s publication Standing, the nonpartisan group alleges Carr abused his authority as a licensed lawyer and federal official to intimidate media retailers, misrepresent the legislation, and allow what it known as a “shakedown” of Paramount International.
The criticism facilities on Carr’s function within the FCC’s approval of the $8 billion merger between Paramount and Skydance Media, which adopted a controversial $16 million settlement paid by Paramount to Trump over the “60 Minutes” lawsuit. Carr had revived an FCC inquiry into that interview months earlier.
“Carr used the FCC as a software to strain Paramount into settling a meritless lawsuit with Trump, paving the way in which for the merger’s approval,” the criticism reads. “This conduct violates core moral guidelines governing honesty, misuse of workplace, and interference with justice.”
The submitting accuses Carr of violating a number of skilled conduct guidelines, together with these prohibiting dishonesty, prejudicial conduct, and abuse of public workplace for political achieve. It cites Carr’s public threats towards MSNBC, revived investigations into ABC and NBC Information, and probes into public broadcasting and immigration-related reporting.
Carr has beforehand vowed to push the president’s agenda as FCC chair. The inspiration argues that Carr’s actions have “turned the FCC right into a censoring machine” in service of that agenda.
The D.C. bar has not commented on the criticism, and Carr has not publicly responded. If the bar agrees to pursue the matter, it may lead to sanctions as much as disbarment.
The Freedom of the Press Basis promotes public-interest journalism with a deal with authorities transparency and press freedom, works to guard journalists and whistleblowers, supplies safety coaching for newsrooms and advocates for authorized reforms.
