Belgium will recognise the State of Palestine on the United Nations Basic Meeting (UNGA) later this month, Belgian Minister of International Affairs Maxime Prevot has introduced.

“Palestine will probably be recognised by Belgium on the UN session! And agency sanctions will probably be imposed in opposition to the Israeli authorities,” Prevot, who can also be the deputy prime minister, wrote on the social media platform X early on Tuesday.

Prevot stated Belgium would additionally impose 12 “agency sanctions” on Israel, together with a ban on importing merchandise from the settlements, and “a assessment of public procurement insurance policies with Israeli firms”.

He added that the announcement was made “in gentle of the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine, significantly in Gaza”.
