Sudan’s army chief has confirmed the military’s withdrawal from its final western stronghold of el-Fasher after the paramilitary Speedy Help Forces (RSF) declared management of town.

In a televised tackle, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan mentioned he had authorized the withdrawal in response to the “systematic destruction and killing of civilians”.

He mentioned he had agreed with native leaders to “go away and go to a protected place to guard the remaining residents and the remainder of town from destruction”.

The UN has raised the alarm over stories of atrocities dedicated by the RSF in latest days, and has referred to as for protected passage for trapped civilians.
