President Donald Trump plans to replace Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., while transitioning her to special envoy for the Shield of the Americas. This new role involves collaboration with Latin American countries on drug cartel interdiction, announced recently.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Demands Answers
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker released a video statement criticizing Noem’s tenure. “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” Pritzker said. He described her legacy as “corruption and chaos,” citing incidents of tear-gassing parents and children, and shootings of U.S. citizen moms and nurses. “Now that you’re gone, don’t think you get to just walk away,” he added. “I guarantee you, you will still be held accountable.”
Pritzker’s office elaborated that Noem oversaw excessive force near homes, schools, and hospitals, including tear-gassing neighborhoods with military-style tactics against citizens. “It is long past time she steps down from her role, but we cannot ever let that excuse her from justice or accountability,” Pritzker stated. “Illinois will continue demanding answers and exposing the unacceptable conduct harming Americans that happened on her watch.”
The governor established the Illinois Accountability Commission to document federal law enforcement actions and recommend corrections. This panel specifically reviews Noem’s decisions in “Operation: Midway Blitz” in Chicago, along with key moments from her Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, such as labeling U.S. citizen agitators “domestic terrorists” and questions about a dog shooting and a multimillion-dollar ad contract.
Retired federal Judge Ruben Castillo, appointed commission chairman by Pritzker, stated: “My three decades of legal experience has always shown that the statements and related actions of parties show motive and intent. This situation is no different.”
DHS Rejects State Scrutiny
A DHS spokesperson dismissed Pritzker’s efforts as unlawful. “Federal officials acting in the course of their duties are immune from liability under state law,” the spokesperson said. The response blames politicians for inciting hatred against federal officers, noting that most Americans view ICE agents as heroic.
DHS highlighted recent ICE captures of criminals, including Alfonso Batalla-Garcia from Mexico, convicted of homicide, sex assault, and kidnapping; Leonardo Ignot-Osto, convicted of child abduction; Luis Chavez, a Latin Kings gang member with battery and gun convictions; and Angkham Souvongkham from Laos, with charges including domestic violence, assault, burglary, and terroristic threats.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Echoes Call for Justice
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz warned Noem of future scrutiny. Speaking recently, Walz emphasized accountability: “No one’s above the law and they’re accountable.” He suggested Noem prepare for more time in Minnesota to address issues.
Walz urged senators to delay Mullin’s confirmation until Minnesota officials join investigations into the agent-involved shootings of anti-enforcement agitators Alex Pretti and Renee Good. “Don’t vote for anything until they let us be part of the investigation into these murders,” he stated.
