Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) will form the next government in Tamil Nadu on Saturday at 11 a.m., following approval from Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The decision ends days of political uncertainty after a hung assembly verdict, the first since 1952.
Key Allies Supporting TVK
TVK gains unconditional backing from the Indian National Congress (INC), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). Congress shifts from its long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to provide this support.
The CPI and CPI(M) offer external support without joining the government. Meanwhile, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which secured two seats, declines to back TVK and aligns with the DMK-led alliance.
Assembly Seat Breakdown
TVK won 108 seats in the 233-member assembly but falls short of the 118-seat majority. Vijay’s victories in Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) require him to vacate one, reducing TVK’s tally to 107.
- Congress: 5 seats
- CPI: 2 seats
- CPI(M): 2 seats
- VCK: 2 seats
Combined support pushes the alliance to 118 seats, surpassing the majority threshold.
Path to Government Formation
After two unsuccessful visits to the governor’s office, Vijay secures Left party endorsements. He meets Governor Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Guindy, paving the way for the swearing-in ceremony and resolving the post-election deadlock.
