The Assam Cabinet has approved a 3% reservation for Tea Tribes and Adivasi communities in Class I and II state government positions. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision after a Cabinet meeting at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Dispur, Guwahati.

Boosting Representation in Senior Roles

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “The Assam Cabinet has decided to provide a 3 percent reservation in Government Grade I and II jobs for Tea Garden and Adivasi people.”

This measure extends existing quotas in Class III and IV posts, aiming to increase representation of these communities in policy-making and administrative roles. It addresses their historical underrepresentation despite significant contributions to Assam’s tea economy.

The initiative targets educated youth from these groups, encouraging higher education and narrowing persistent socio-economic disparities.

Key Additional Decisions

The Cabinet also allocated Rs 335 crore to establish a second Sainik School in Karbi Anglong. Other approvals include:

  • A Vote-on-Account Budget for the early part of 2026-27.
  • Seed capital for 107,532 more women under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan.
  • Land allocation for the Assam Cricket Association in Dhemaji.
  • Rs 20 crore for heritage tourism development in Jorhat’s Borbheti area.
  • 15 days of earned leave for teachers.
  • Relaxed promotion rules for agricultural service personnel.

These steps combine social justice, employment opportunities, infrastructure development, and economic growth, as highlighted by the Chief Minister.
