The latest season of Bridgerton has sparked discussions after introducing a gender-swapped character for Francesca’s storyline, yet the series presses forward with the narrative choice. Season 4, part 1 premiered on January 29, featuring Francesca (played by Hannah Dodd) and her husband John (Victor Alli) returning from Scotland. Their time away involved sharing a home with Francesca’s sister Eloise (Claudia Jessie) and John’s cousin, setting the stage for Francesca’s adjustment to married life.

Francesca’s Marital Journey in Season 4

In the episodes, Francesca and John face challenges in expanding their family, as they have not yet conceived. Francesca reflects on not reaching an emotional peak in her relationship with John. Following a heartfelt discussion, she feels more secure in her marriage and organizes a party at their London home. The event takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of Michaela, leaving Francesca visibly unsettled.

Origins of the Gender Swap Decision

Season 3 laid the groundwork for Francesca’s romance by introducing her to John during her societal debut, culminating in their marriage and future plans by the end of part 2. This diverges from the original novel When He Was Wicked, where Francesca’s key relationship develops with John’s cousin Michael, a change that drew criticism from some book fans.

Showrunner Jess Brownell explained that the decision to portray Michaela instead of Michael was intentional from the show’s early stages. Brownell stated in a June 2024 interview that she pitched the reveal starting from season 1, drawing thematic inspiration from the books without arbitrarily adding queer representation. She emphasized receiving full support from author Julia Quinn before proceeding.

Brownell noted the diverse nature of the fanbase, acknowledging that adaptations inevitably disappoint some viewers regardless of the source material. She highlighted that the choice prioritized compelling storytelling and character development, ensuring the emotional depth of Francesca’s arc remains intact.

Author’s Perspective on the Adaptation

Julia Quinn addressed fan concerns in a June 2025 Instagram post, expressing confidence in the adaptation’s potential. She described Francesca’s season as the most emotionally charged in the series, mirroring the tear-jerker quality of her novel. Quinn pointed out that John’s expanded screen time allows audiences to connect more deeply with the character, potentially amplifying the story’s impact.

Season 4 of Bridgerton continues with part 2 on February 26, promising further exploration of these evolving relationships.
