Legendary Democratic strategist James Carville issues a stark alert on the New Hampshire Senate race, urging greater focus amid tight polling. The contest between Democrat Chris Pappas and Republican John Sununu remains neck-and-neck, with recent surveys showing margins of just one to three points.
High Stakes for Senate Control
Carville emphasizes the critical implications for Democrats’ Senate majority. “If Chris Pappas loses, Democrats need to flip five seats instead of four. That math does not exist,” he states bluntly in a recent campaign memo, noting he rarely issues such warnings.
“What I’m seeing in New Hampshire right now is keeping me up at night — and it should concern y’all too,” Carville adds, highlighting the urgency.
Tied Race Echoes Past Upsets
The strategist draws parallels to Pennsylvania’s 2024 Senate race, where Democrat Bob Casey fell despite consistent leads. “A race that has been tied for six months is not a comfortable position. It is a warning sign. I have seen what happens when we assume a race is in-hand and the resources don’t follow,” he cautions.
Sununu Poses Strong Challenge
Carville portrays Sununu as a tough adversary with deep establishment support. The Republican built substantial personal wealth over decades on corporate boards before re-entering politics, bolstering his campaign.
“Listen: I don’t write memos like this for every race. I wrote this one because I’m genuinely worried about what happens if New Hampshire slips away while everyone’s looking somewhere else,” Carville concludes.
