Maharashtra Chief Minister Opts Out of Election Drive
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has chosen to forgo campaigning in the upcoming rural local body elections following the tragic death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The decision came into effect on Saturday, just three days after Pawar’s fatal plane crash in Baramati.
Fadnavis has directed local leaders and party officials to handle the election efforts instead. He will not participate in any campaign activities for the polls set for February 7.
Election Schedule Adjustments
The elections cover 12 Zilla Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis. Originally planned earlier, the date shifted due to a three-day mourning period declared by the government in response to Pawar’s passing. Campaigning concludes on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 9.
Prior arrangements had Fadnavis slated to speak at 22 meetings across seven days, but those plans are now scrapped, according to state officials.
Impact on NCP and Pune Politics
Ajit Pawar’s absence creates a significant gap in the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) strategy, particularly in Pune district. For the first time in nearly three decades, the Pune Zilla Parishad elections will proceed without his influence, as he had been a dominant force in local politics.
The polls in Pune anticipate a head-to-head battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and NCP. Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister on Saturday, marking her as the first woman to hold the position in Maharashtra.
Details of the Plane Crash
Ajit Pawar and four others perished when their Learjet 45 crashed in Baramati, en route to rallies for the rural elections. The aircraft departed Mumbai at 8:10 a.m. and descended after 13 minutes, but the pilot aborted the initial landing due to poor visibility of the runway.
After circling for another attempt, the plane deviated from its path and crashed. Pawar was set to address key gatherings at the time of the incident.
