Draymond Green aims to avoid resembling Charles Barkley during his Houston Rockets days as he enters the later stages of his career. The 36-year-old Golden State Warriors forward expressed this view directly to the 63-year-old NBA legend before the New York Knicks’ playoff victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Green’s On-Air Comment Sparks Backlash
Stepping in for Shaquille O’Neal on Inside the NBA, Green addressed his team’s playoff absence this season and its uncertain future. When Barkley noted that everything ends and sports favor the young, Green responded sharply: “I think the goal is just to not look like you in the Houston Rockets uniform.”
Barkley stayed composed, but co-host Kenny Smith pressed Green for clarification. Green followed up by asking, “Did you see it?”
Barkley’s Strong Late-Career Stats
Barkley arrived in Houston in 1996 via a trade from Phoenix—swapping for Chucky Brown, Mark Bryant, Sam Cassell, and Robert Horry—after 10 consecutive All-Star nods. Despite critiques on defense and fitness in his final years, he delivered reliably, averaging 17 points and 12.6 rebounds per game across his last four NBA seasons.
His production dipped partly due to sharing the court with Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.
Fans Counter with Stats Comparison
Supporters quickly highlighted Green’s own recent numbers—8.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in the 2025-26 season—falling short of Barkley’s late-career output. On X, one fan remarked, “The lack of self awareness this guy has is amazing. Houston Chuck is better than peak Draymond.”
Another added, “[I don’t know] why he said this cuz Charles’ last season was better than Draymonds (sic) best.” Critics also questioned Green’s show appearance, with comments like, “I generally love the show, but I turn it off when Draymond is on,” and “Barkley was right. Green is a jerk.”
