Gujarat Rabies Case Sparks Community Alarm

A 30-year-old laborer from Nalasar village in Banaskantha district, Gujarat, remains in critical condition at Palanpur Civil Trauma Centre due to suspected rabies. The father of three suffered a dog bite three months earlier but skipped the essential post-exposure vaccination, leading to a severe outbreak of symptoms.

Violent Symptoms Emerge

Residents in the village grew alarmed this week as the man displayed intense neurological signs associated with the ‘furious’ rabies variant. Witnesses describe him barking aggressively, moving on all fours, and lashing out unpredictably. During one episode at home, he assaulted his wife, prompting family members to tie him with ropes before rushing him to the hospital around 3 a.m. on January 30, 2026.

Hospital Chaos and Restraint Efforts

Upon arrival, the patient’s aggression persisted, as he escaped initial restraints, gnawed on a metal bed frame, and yelled at fellow patients. Hospital officials promptly alerted the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and Forest Department for assistance. Forest experts deployed specialized nets to secure him, allowing medical teams to administer sedatives and intravenous fluids safely.

“The patient arrived in an extremely agitated condition,” stated Dr. Sunil Joshi from Palanpur Civil Hospital. “We coordinated with several agencies, including the Forest Department, to protect our staff and other patients. Blood tests and treatment continue, but his status is still dire.”

Rabies Facts and Prevention Urged

Health professionals emphasize that rabies proves nearly always fatal after symptoms like hydrophobia, aerophobia, and heightened irritability surface. The virus, transmitted via saliva from bites or scratches, can incubate for weeks or months—in this instance, 90 days post-bite—before invading the central nervous system.

To prevent such tragedies, experts recommend immediate medical attention for any animal attack. The post-exposure prophylaxis protocol involves vaccinations on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 or 28. As of Sunday, the man stays isolated under heavy sedation, with authorities leveraging the incident to promote prompt vaccination following stray dog encounters.
