Markets show optimism that the Iran conflict could conclude soon, fueled by former President Donald Trump’s description of it as a “short-term excursion.” Should hostilities cease, oil and gas tankers would resume passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for energy shipments, potentially stabilizing fuel prices and boosting economic activity.

Trump’s recent discussion with Vladimir Putin also signals possible U.S. relaxation of sanctions on Russia, a major global oil and gas exporter, further lifting market sentiments.

Focus on Natural Gas Shortages

India faces acute challenges with natural gas supplies. The nation imports roughly 60% of its LPG and half of its natural gas, primarily from Qatar and other West Asian countries. The ongoing war disrupts shipping routes, complicating deliveries. Unlike oil, natural gas requires ultra-low temperatures for storage, limiting India’s reserves.

To address this, the Government of India introduces controlled allocation, prioritizing piped natural gas (PNG) for household cooking and compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles. Fertilizer plants and other industries receive supplies only after essentials are met. LPG for domestic cooking also gains top priority.

Careful Planning Essential for Rationing

This approach prioritizes critical needs, but definitions of “essential” demand precision. Many individuals rely on factory canteens, roadside eateries, restaurants, and hotels rather than home cooking. Truck drivers, travelers, and delivery personnel depend on these outlets. Gas shortages there could halt operations for businesses and workers for days or weeks.

Rationing risks sparking perceptions of severe shortages, prompting panic buying and opportunistic price surges. Authorities must enforce measures to prevent such disruptions.

Energy Conservation Tips

Now presents an ideal opportunity to promote conservation. Practical steps include covering pots while cooking, opting for microwaves or induction cookers. In the Philippines, government offices maintain air conditioners at 24°C during high fuel costs.

Long-Term Independence Strategies

India should accelerate efforts to cut import reliance. Expanding biogas production from agricultural waste and organic materials offers a viable path. Abundant resources exist domestically, capable of meeting national needs. Byproducts like compost could substitute chemical fertilizers, saving billions annually.
