Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Israel has constructed a covert military base in Iraq to bolster its operations against Iran. The facility, established in February, served as a key logistics hub for the Israeli Air Force, accommodating special forces and search-and-rescue units prepared for potential pilot recoveries.
Close Call with Iraqi Forces
In March, Iraqi troops nearly uncovered the site, leading Israeli forces to conduct preemptive airstrikes that killed one Iraqi soldier. Local reports described a shepherd observing unusual activity, including helicopters and gunfire in a remote desert area. These strikes effectively halted further Iraqi probes.
The Israel Defense Forces declined to comment on the matter.
Initial Accusations Against the US
Iraq initially attributed the March incident to the United States, stating it was a “reckless operation carried out without coordination or approval.” US officials firmly denied involvement. A senior Iraqi military official noted at the time: “It appears there was a certain force on the ground before the strike, supported from the air, operating beyond the capabilities of our units.”
Israeli Confirmation of Special Operations
In March, then-Israeli Air Force chief Major General Tomer Bar highlighted ongoing special forces activities, stating: “The troops of the air force’s special units are currently carrying out extraordinary missions that can spark one’s imagination.” He provided no further details.
Ideal Location in Iraq’s Western Desert
Experts point to Iraq’s vast western desert as an optimal site for such a clandestine outpost due to its sparse population and expansive terrain. Michael Knights, head of the Horizon Engage intelligence firm, explained: “It’s normal that before operations you reconnoitre and set up these kinds of locations.”
Iraq’s strategic position between Jordan and Iran places it at the center of regional conflicts. The nation balances ties with Washington and Tehran, facing US pressure to dismantle Iran-backed militias designated as terrorist groups. These militias recently attacked US interests, including the Baghdad embassy, airport facilities, and foreign-operated oil fields, prompting US counterstrikes that eliminated numerous fighters.
