External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conducted a telephonic discussion with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday afternoon amid intensifying conflicts in West Asia.

Jaishankar shared on X: “Had a telecon with Iranian FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi this afternoon.” Specific details of their exchange remain undisclosed.

India Voices Deep Concern

India has expressed profound worry over the escalating violence in Iran and the Gulf region. Officials urge all parties to show restraint and safeguard civilians as disruptions severely impact daily life.

Nearly 10 million Indian nationals reside and work in the Gulf area, placing their security as the top priority. “We cannot ignore developments that threaten them,” a Ministry of External Affairs statement notes.

Economic and Security Risks

The conflict endangers India’s trade routes and energy supplies passing through the region, posing significant economic threats. India staunchly opposes assaults on merchant vessels, with recent incidents claiming lives or leaving some Indian citizens missing.

Security advisories now guide Indian expatriates in affected West Asian zones, as authorities monitor events closely given the substantial diaspora presence.

Push for Diplomacy

India firmly advocates dialogue and diplomatic solutions to restore peace. “India strongly reiterates its call for dialogue and diplomacy. We raise our voice clearly in favour of an early end to the conflict. Already, many lives have been regrettably lost and we express our grief in that regard,” the statement adds.

Prior exchanges between Jaishankar and Araghchi highlighted India’s deep concerns and the imperative for de-escalation over further hostilities. Araghchi actively pursues diplomatic ties with various nations on regional matters.

The latest call occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions, including a recent US-Israel operation targeting Iran, underscoring West Asia’s critical role in global energy and stability.
