Vikings Star Reflects on Quarterback ‘What If’ Scenario

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson has openly pondered whether his team’s disappointing 9-8 season might have unfolded differently with former quarterback Sam Darnold leading the offense instead of the injury-plagued J.J. McCarthy.

“Everyone recognizes the challenges we faced at quarterback this season,” Jefferson stated. “Having someone who already understood our system, knew the playbook, and had established chemistry with me, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and others – I truly believe that continuity could have improved our results.”

Quarterback Contrasts Define Seasons

Darnold initially joined the Vikings in 2024 as a temporary solution while McCarthy developed, but circumstances changed dramatically when McCarthy suffered a preseason injury. Under head coach Kevin O’Connell’s guidance, Darnold delivered a career-best performance, throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns while earning his first Pro Bowl selection.

Despite this success, Minnesota opted not to retain Darnold, who subsequently signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract with Seattle. The quarterback then led the Seahawks to Super Bowl LX in his first season with the franchise.

Injury Woes Hamper Vikings’ Plans

Meanwhile, McCarthy struggled through another injury-riddled campaign in Minnesota, participating in just 52% of offensive snaps and attempting only 243 passes. The young quarterback has now missed 25 games over his first two professional seasons.

While publicly supporting McCarthy’s potential, Jefferson acknowledged the emotional difficulty watching Darnold thrive elsewhere. “It’s tough to watch,” the star receiver admitted. “I’m thrilled he’s reaching the Super Bowl – he deserves this after overcoming early career doubts. People finally recognize him as a top-tier quarterback.”

Mixed Emotions About What Could Have Been

Jefferson expressed both professional disappointment and personal happiness regarding his former teammate’s success: “Selfishly, I wish he’d achieved this with us last season. But seeing him excel immediately after leaving proves his capability. I’m fully supporting Seattle and believe they’ll win it all.”

The Vikings’ offensive struggles this season have amplified questions about their quarterback decisions, particularly as their former backup prepares to start on football’s biggest stage.
