King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow has launched a pioneering forensic expert-led autopsy system, marking a significant advancement in Uttar Pradesh’s medico-legal practices. This initiative enhances scientific precision in identifying causes of death, speeds up post-mortem reports, and bolsters the reliability of evidence in legal proceedings.

New Rotational Duty Framework

The structured system resolves six months of operational challenges stemming from the lack of a formal duty roster. Trained forensic specialists now handle autopsies on fixed weekly rotations at this major medico-legal hub, ensuring consistent expertise and accountability.

Eleven forensic experts form three units, each taking turns for dedicated duties. This replaces the previous arrangement where Provincial Medical Health Services (PMHS) doctors managed most autopsies, including those on unidentified bodies and high-sensitivity cases, while juggling clinical workloads.

Expert Insights on the Shift

Dr NB Singh, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), highlights the transformation: “This marks the first instance in Lucknow’s history where panel post-mortems rely exclusively on forensic and toxicology experts. Previously, panels included one forensic specialist alongside two PMHS doctors.”

The consistent involvement of forensic professionals promises greater accuracy in establishing both cause and manner of death. It minimizes reporting discrepancies, fosters better collaboration with law enforcement, and elevates evidence quality for court use.

Prof KK Singh, KGMU spokesperson, adds that the framework enables more timely and efficient autopsy processes.

Operational Impact and Volume

Previously, the absence of a roster strained PMHS doctors and raised concerns about assessment uniformity. Dedicated forensic teams now ensure specialist oversight for all panel cases.

KGMU’s post-mortem facility performs over 20 autopsies daily, managing 7,500 to 8,000 cases yearly from more than 52 police stations, including Government Railway Police areas. Authorities anticipate smoother workflows, faster report delivery, and heightened efficiency at this key Uttar Pradesh facility.
