New York Knicks icons from the 1990s maintain that the current squad possesses every tool needed for playoff success and beyond. Averaging 129 points per game fails to fully impress these legends; instead, they spotlight the team’s defensive resurgence.

About seven hours before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden, John Starks praised the Knicks’ defense during a four-game winning streak that limited opponents to 95.5 points per game. He focused on this grit over the offensive outbursts that produced blowout victories.

Return to Defensive Roots

“They have returned to their core identity—defense first,” Starks stated at BTIG Charity Day. “The team has elevated its performance on that end of the court, creating a massive impact. They play physically, dominate rebounds, push the pace in transition, and share the ball effectively. This reflects the hallmarks of a championship contender.”

Starks, a veteran of 18 playoff series with the Knicks, described the recent surge—eliminating the Atlanta Hawks and grabbing a 1-0 series lead over the 76ers—as unprecedented in his experience.
