A man questioned in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, maintains his innocence following a traffic stop in Arizona.

The individual, identifying himself as Carlos, explained that authorities pulled over his vehicle in Rio Rico, south of Tucson, on Tuesday, February 10. Officers informed him he was detained for kidnapping. “I asked, ‘The kidnapping of who?’ and they told me this lady … I don’t know her name,” Carlos recounted, before learning it involved Nancy Guthrie.

“I told [officers], ‘I work in Tucson for GLS. I might have delivered a package to your house, but I never kidnapped anybody,’” he added. Officials released him after questioning, and he denied any knowledge of Nancy’s February 1 disappearance from her Catalina Foothills home near Tucson.

Traffic Stop and Initial Detention

Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies detained the subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson. “The subject is currently being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the department stated.

Court-Authorized Search Underway

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, with assistance from the FBI’s Evidence Response Team, executed a court-authorized search at a residence in Rio Rico related to the case. “This operation is expected to last several hours. No further details at this time,” officials confirmed.

Family Member Addresses Search

Josefina, the homeowner, confirmed authorities searched her property. She stated her son-in-law, Carlos, along with her daughter and grandchildren, were stopped while making DoorDash deliveries. Police seized multiple electronic devices, including “my phone, my husband’s phone, my daughter’s phone, my grandkids’ phone and my son-in-law’s phone,” Josefina said.

Josefina denied any awareness of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance beyond briefly seeing news coverage on Facebook. When shown black-and-white FBI photos of a potential suspect wearing a ski mask outside Nancy’s home on the night she vanished, she rejected any resemblance to Carlos. “He doesn’t look like that,” she insisted, describing him as a “good guy” with no criminal or violent background.

The investigation continues as authorities pursue leads in the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie.
