Marvel Rivals, the hero shooter from NetEase Games, continues to surge in popularity more than a year after its launch. The development team recently hosted a fan event at the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles, California, unveiling upcoming skins and limited-time modes tied to the MCU Avengers films ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.

Leadership Insights from the Team

Yachen Bian, NetEase Games’ publishing and marketing lead, and Guangguang, the creative director, shared updates on community culture, game balance, and content strategies. Guangguang has emerged as the game’s public face through his signature line, “Hello everyone, Guangguang here,” featured in Dev Vision videos on the official Marvel Rivals YouTube channel.

“It was a happy accident,” Guangguang states. “The first time we did this, it was just me and Zhiyong, the lead combat designer, showcasing the team’s work for the community.”

Steady Content Pipeline and Balance Challenges

The game expands with at least two new heroes and one map each season. To maintain this pace, the team plans a year ahead, with much of the 2027 roadmap already complete.

Community theories suggest some heroes launch overpowered to boost playtime. Bian refutes this: “We didn’t do that on purpose. It’s always an accident.” Guangguang adds that balance adjustments create unintended ripple effects across the roster.

Limited-Time Modes and Hero Roster Growth

Limited-time modes test new hero abilities while preserving core kits, as seen in Marvel Zombies with characters like Blade and Jeff the Land Shark. The upcoming Path to Doomsday events recreate iconic Avengers scenes, starting in April with moments from the first Avengers film. One player controls Loki with unique skills, defended against by six others.

With 47 playable heroes currently and more incoming each season, Guangguang sees no issue with roster size. “The community constantly requests new heroes,” he notes, emphasizing a true comic-book experience.

Focus on Community and Competition

“We just focus more on our audience and what our community wants,” Bian explains. In the crowded shooter market, this approach fosters strong player connections.

Addressing ‘Gooner’ Skins Controversy

Skins for characters like Emma Frost, Squirrel Girl, and Mantis highlight their allure, sparking adult-themed fan content known as ‘gooner’ material. Bian addresses this directly: “We didn’t do that kind of content on purpose. We also didn’t want to let it become a technique to attract users. That is not the philosophy of the game.”

Such designs draw from Marvel’s universe, like swimsuit collections, to deliver authentic experiences. “Some players like it, and some don’t,” Bian continues. “We’ll stick to that philosophy and let the results be results.”

Handling Community Passion

Fans show intense passion, evident in recent backlash over a $40,000 content creator tournament. “People have a strong emotion for the game,” Bian observes. “What we want is to serve all players and keep the community healthy. For serious issues, we intervene, but otherwise, let them be what they are.”

Marvel Rivals thrives with consistent updates and MCU tie-ins, drawing players back. The free-to-play title is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
