Miami – The Miami Heat have secured additional draft compensation from the Charlotte Hornets in connection with the January 2024 trade involving Terry Rozier, even as his federal gambling case continues through the courts.

Trade Details and Investigation Timeline

The deal sent guard Kyle Lowry and a lottery-protected future first-round pick to the Hornets in exchange for Rozier. At the time, the NBA and Hornets knew of an ongoing league investigation into Rozier’s potential role in a gambling scandal, but the Heat received no such information.

Rozier went on NBA leave the morning after the Heat’s October 22 season opener against the Orlando Magic, following his arrest in Orlando.

League Commissioner’s Pledge

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stated he would pursue fair compensation for the Heat’s lack of prior knowledge. During the NBA Cup final rounds in Las Vegas, Silver expressed sympathy, saying, “In terms of Miami, this is an unprecedented situation. I think I’m incredibly sympathetic to the Heat and to their fans. But I think we’re going to try to work something through, work this out with them.”

He added, “There’s no obvious solution here… there’s no doubt at the moment they have a player that can’t perform services for them. And as to the draft pick they conveyed — obviously he hasn’t been convicted of anything yet, either, but this is an unfortunate circumstance. Sometimes there’s unique events and maybe sometimes they require unique solutions.”

Compensation Awarded

The league notified the Heat that they will receive a second-round pick in June’s draft, owed to the Hornets by either the Golden State Warriors or Denver Nuggets. Current standings point to the Warriors’ pick, projected at No. 44 entering Monday’s games.

The Heat lack their own second-round selection in June but could acquire the Brooklyn Nets’ pick if it falls at No. 55 or better – a scenario requiring the Nets to post one of the league’s top five records, now impossible.

First-Round Pick Obligation Persists

The first-round pick owed to the Hornets remains unresolved. It conveys in 2027 if outside the top 14 lottery positions; otherwise, it becomes unprotected in 2028.

NBA rules barring successive future first-round pick trades leave the Heat unable to deal their 2026, 2027, 2028, or 2029 selections due to this commitment.

Rozier stays on the Heat’s roster and payroll, with the option to waive him anytime to sign another player.
