A 22-year-old woman in Pune succumbed to severe throat injuries on Friday, nine days after a brutal blade attack by her male acquaintance at her home in Chandan Nagar.
Attack Unfolds in Pathare Vasti
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on April 29 at the residence of Ujaladevi Jaswantsingh Dohare, originally from Uttar Pradesh. The 30-year-old suspect, Dilip Ramesh Rathod from Hingoli and residing in Lohegaon, entered the home while she was alone—her brother and sister-in-law were at work—and slashed her throat during an argument before fleeing.
Despite critical wounds, the victim contacted her brother by phone. Neighbors and relatives rushed her to a nearby private hospital, where doctors admitted her to the intensive care unit.
Victim Identifies Attacker
Police arrived at the hospital but could not question her verbally due to her injuries. She requested pen and paper, wrote the suspect’s name, and enabled his swift identification and arrest on Sunday. Rathod remains in police custody until May 10.
Relationship Background
The pair met while working at a local shopping mall, developed a relationship, but faced opposition from her brother. Her parents arranged a marriage in their native village, sparking frequent disputes. The fatal confrontation erupted when she returned home from work.
Nilesh Gorakshanath Badakh, senior police inspector at Chandan Nagar police station, stated, “The accused entered the house and attacked her, slitting her throat with a blade before fleeing the spot.”
The victim passed away around 2 a.m. on Friday during treatment. Authorities plan to upgrade the case to murder, with investigations ongoing.
