Emotional In Memoriam Performance Marks Grammy Debut
Country music legend Reba McEntire delivered a profoundly moving performance at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, honoring her late stepson Brandon Blackstock during the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment. The 70-year-old artist performed her nominated single ‘Trailblazer’ while images of Blackstock appeared onscreen, prompting emotional reactions from attendees and viewers.
A Personal Tribute
Earlier in the evening, McEntire confirmed her performance would serve as a tribute to Blackstock, who passed away in August at age 48 following a three-year battle with melanoma. ‘We lost Brandon to heaven in August,’ the singer stated during an interview, ‘so tonight we’ll be celebrating his life.’
Brandon Blackstock, a music manager and television producer known for his previous marriage to Kelly Clarkson, was remembered through McEntire’s heartfelt rendition accompanied by a live band at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena.
Family Legacy
Blackstock became McEntire’s stepson through her 26-year marriage to his father, talent manager Narvel Blackstock. A family statement released in August confirmed his passing: ‘Brandon courageously fought cancer for more than three years before passing peacefully surrounded by loved ones.’
Blackstock and Clarkson married in 2013, welcoming two children before divorcing in 2020. Their professional relationship continued through contentious legal proceedings regarding management commissions, which were ultimately resolved in Clarkson’s favor through a California Labor Commissioner ruling.
Grammy Highlights and Social Statements
The evening saw Bad Bunny claim Album of the Year for ‘DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS,’ while Kendrick Lamar and SZA won Record of the Year for their collaboration ‘luther.’ Olivia Dean received the Best New Artist honor, and Billie Eilish earned Song of the Year for ‘WILDFLOWER.’
Several artists used the platform to address social issues, with many attendees wearing ‘ICE out’ pins protesting U.S. immigration policies. Bad Bunny made direct reference to immigration concerns during his acceptance speech for the night’s top award.
Country Music Honors
Other notable winners included Chris Stapleton for Best Country Solo Performance and Jelly Roll for Best Contemporary Country Album. McEntire’s performance stood out among country music highlights, marking her first-ever Grammy stage appearance after decades in the industry.
The ceremony’s In Memoriam segment traditionally honors music industry figures lost during the preceding year, with McEntire’s personal tribute creating one of the evening’s most memorable moments.
