Students from the University of Regina’s Muslim community united to distribute more than 100 winter packages and hot meals to individuals experiencing homelessness. The effort targeted various locations across the city, with distributions conducted on foot and by vehicle, starting at Carmichael Outreach.
Collaborative Community Initiative
This outreach program represents a joint venture among six key organizations: the Muslim Medical Association of Canada, Saskatchewan Arabs Society, Muslims Professionals Society, Islamic Relief at the University of Regina, and One Faith Foundation. Participants assemble and deliver these essential items annually, drawing inspiration from their faith to support those in need.
Bushra Alzawaid, a first-year student at the University of Regina, explained the driving force behind the activity. “This act is part of the Islamic pillars known as Zakat, which emphasizes giving back to the community through charity,” she stated.
Expanding Reach and Future Plans
Now in its third year in Regina and fifth in Saskatoon, the initiative continues to grow. Following the recent event in Regina, organizers plan to replicate it in Saskatoon the following weekend. As Ramadan approaches, the students aim to organize additional events that align with Islamic principles of generosity and community service.
