The Sheep Detectives (PG, 109 mins)
Verdict: A playful sheep-themed whodunit with charm but uneven execution. Rating: Three stars.
This family-friendly ovine comedy follows in the footsteps of favorites like Shaun the Sheep and Farmageddon, delivering occasional bursts of delight amid a quirky murder mystery. The film features a stellar cast and creative team, yet it only sporadically matches the high standards set by its predecessors.
Star-Studded Cast and Production Team
Hugh Jackman stars as George Hardy, a dedicated shepherd who names his flock—including the feisty twins Ronnie and Reggie—feeds them special blue medicine, and reads detective novels at dusk. Emma Thompson portrays his sharp-witted lawyer. The voice cast shines with Bryan Cranston as Sebastian, Chris O’Dowd as Mopple, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the brilliant Lily, Patrick Stewart, and others.
Director Kyle Balda, known for Minions, helms the project. Writer Craig Mazin brings his range from The Hangover Part II to the acclaimed Chernobyl miniseries. Producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title add prestige to this adaptation of Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel Three Bags Full.
Plot: A Woolly Whodunit
Set in rural England, the story evokes Agatha Christie and Midsomer Murders with a twist: talking sheep lead the investigation. After George Hardy’s mysterious death, his intelligent flock—spearheaded by Lily, the world’s smartest sheep—springs into action. They suspect everyone from a local police officer (Nicholas Braun, channeling his Succession dimwit vibe), a persistent journalist (Nicholas Galitzine), and a cunning shopkeeper (Hong Chau).
Thompson’s character reveals George’s will, disclosing two adopted children, thickening the plot. The sheep, versed in detective tales from George’s readings, cleverly note how police often blame ‘a drifter’ in such cases.
What Works and What Doesn’t
The CGI sheep look impressive and move convincingly, propelling a fast-paced narrative packed with suspects reminiscent of the Knives Out series. Witty dialogue elicits smiles, blending humor with suspense.
However, the convoluted storyline leaves some viewers wanting more depth and surprise. While entertaining, it fails to fully fleece audiences with the expected level of brilliance.
