Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026, achieving a historic milestone as the first Indian finance minister to deliver nine consecutive budgets. She carried the digital Bahi-Khata tablet in its traditional red silk pouch, symbolizing a blend of modern governance and cultural roots.

Symbolic Attire Reflects Heritage and Economic Vision

Sitharaman’s choice of attire highlighted national heritage and support for traditional craftsmanship. For this landmark presentation, she wore an elegant maroon handloom silk saree featuring fine mustard yellow checks and a dark brown border. The rich, earthy tones conveyed a sense of gravity appropriate for the occasion, while the classic weave emphasized India’s handloom legacy.

Complementing the saree, she paired it with a mustard-colored blouse that harmonized with the woven details. This ensemble balanced cultural depth with a formal demeanor, aligning with the budget’s themes of reform and long-term economic strategies.

Continuing Tradition from Previous Budgets

In line with her practice of incorporating regional artistry, Sitharaman selected clothing that underscores economic and cultural narratives. For the 2025 Union Budget, she opted for a cream-colored Madhubani hand-painted saree with a golden border, a gift from Padma Shri awardee and Madhubani artist Dulari Devi, received during a visit to the Mithila Art Institute in Bihar.

The budget presentation not only outlined key economic policies but also served as a visual nod to India’s artisanal traditions, reinforcing continuity and innovation in fiscal planning.
