Tunisian opposition chief Rached Ghannouchi has been sentenced to 14 years in jail, including to a string of different jail phrases he has obtained in separate instances.

Ghannouchi, who heads the average Islamist Ennahda celebration, was amongst 18 politicians and officers sentenced on Tuesday for “conspiring in opposition to state safety”.

Ghannouchi’s defence staff denied the costs introduced in opposition to the 84-year-old, saying the proceedings didn’t meet the requirements of a good trial.

President Saied suspended the Tunisian parliament in 2021 and commenced ruling by decree.

Since then, Tunisian and international rights teams have reported rising political repression within the nation that sparked the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.

Most opposition leaders have been jailed since Saied got here to energy, together with some journalists, legal professionals, activists and social media customers.

Saied has rejected accusations of repression, saying his actions are aimed toward bringing an finish to the chaos and corruption beneath earlier governments.
