Altercation During Postgame Protocol Sparks Controversy

A tense incident unfolded following Saturday’s basketball matchup between Morehouse and Tuskegee universities when Tuskegee head coach Benjy Taylor was briefly detained by campus security. The confrontation occurred moments after Morehouse secured a 77-69 victory as teams participated in the customary postgame handshake line.

Security Concerns Precipitate Conflict

According to statements from Taylor’s legal representatives, the coach approached security personnel requesting enforcement of conference safety protocols after several Morehouse football players reportedly entered the court area. Attorneys describe the situation as escalating when these individuals became entangled in the basketball teams’ postgame proceedings, creating what they characterized as a potentially dangerous environment.

Video evidence circulating online shows Taylor engaged in discussion with a uniformed officer prior to being restrained. The footage depicts a verbal exchange culminating in the officer grasping Taylor’s arm and applying handcuffs while players and spectators observed.

Coach, Legal Team Decry Treatment

Civil rights attorney Harry Daniels issued a statement condemning the officer’s actions: “To subject a respected educator and role model to public humiliation through unnecessary restraint before his team, family, and community constitutes unacceptable conduct that demands accountability.”

Taylor expressed profound distress about the incident in his own remarks: “My primary concern was ensuring everyone’s safety as non-team members shouted obscenities in the handshake line. To have my players, family, and Tuskegee community witness this treatment leaves me heartbroken.”

Conflicting Accounts Emerge

Reports suggest the involved security officer described Taylor’s behavior as “very aggressive,” a characterization disputed by Tuskegee athletic administration. Athletic Director Reginald Ruffin maintained that Taylor acted appropriately under conference guidelines: “His request for security assistance in removing unauthorized personnel from the court area was entirely reasonable given the circumstances.”

Potential Legal Action Considered

The incident concluded when Taylor was promptly released without further charges and permitted to travel home with his team. The veteran coach, who has led Tuskegee’s program since 2019 after three decades in collegiate basketball, has retained legal counsel exploring potential civil action.

Neither Morehouse College administration nor their campus police department had issued formal statements regarding the incident at the time of reporting. Conference officials have not commented on whether they will review postgame security protocols.
