World Meteorological Organization Highlights Hottest Decade

The World Meteorological Organization reveals that the period from 2015 to 2025 marks the 11 hottest years ever recorded. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warns of escalating climate chaos, urging immediate global action.

Extreme weather events worldwide, including prolonged heatwaves, heavy rainfall, and severe droughts, have triggered widespread disruptions and significant damage. These incidents underscore the fragility of our tightly interconnected global economies and societies.

Earth’s Energy Imbalance Exposed

For the first time, the annual report introduces key indicators of Earth’s energy imbalance. In a stable climate, incoming solar energy nearly equals outgoing radiation. However, rising greenhouse gases—primarily CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide—disrupt this equilibrium.

The atmosphere retains about 1% of the excess heat, while 91% accumulates in the oceans. This leads to ocean acidification, profound disruptions in marine ecosystems, and alterations in ocean currents essential for maintaining climate stability.

Guterres Calls for Urgent Transition

“Humanity just experienced the 11 hottest years in history,” Guterres states. “When history repeats itself 11 times, it is no longer a random coincidence. It is a call to action.”

He further emphasizes, “Amid wars threatening the world, the climate crisis spotlights another stark reality: our dependence on fossil fuels destabilizes both climate and global security. Now more than ever, we must accelerate a just transition to renewable energy. Renewables secure climate stability, energy independence, and national security.”
