US Strike on Kharg Island Ignites Oil Crisis Over $100/Barrel

The escalating conflict in West Asia disrupts global energy supplies after a precise US military operation targeted Iran’s Kharg Island, the hub for almost 90% of its crude oil exports. Oil markets plunge into chaos as Brent crude futures climb above $101 per barrel, with no immediate relief in sight.

Details of the US Precision Strike

President Donald Trump confirmed the airstrike on Truth Social, calling it “one of the most powerful bombing raids in history.” US forces focused on missile bunkers and naval mine storage facilities, sparing the oil infrastructure directly. Trump emphasized restraint, stating, “I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island for reasons of decency.” He added a stern warning: “However, should Iran do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider.”

Explosions near the terminals halt operations entirely. Tankers evacuate the zone, and satellite images confirm a complete shutdown at Iran’s key economic asset.

Iran’s Retaliatory Threats

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemns the attack as crossing a “dangerous red line,” noting the use of neighboring territories like the UAE for launches. Tehran escalates its stance, targeting regional energy infrastructure linked to US firms. Araghchi declared, “Iran will attack any energy infrastructure in the region which belongs to an American company or where an American company is a shareholder.”

This vow alarms Gulf states, where companies like ExxonMobil and Chevron invest heavily in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and UAE refineries and fields.

Oil Price Surge and US Outlook

American consumers face rising fuel costs amid the turmoil. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright predicts the conflict resolves “in the next few weeks,” but warns of “short-term disruption” and “increased prices on Americans.” The administration provides no assurances against sustained $100-plus oil prices if Iran blockades the Strait of Hormuz.

Call for Multinational Naval Support

President Trump urges a multinational naval task force, inviting the UK, Japan, and South Korea to counter any Iranian blockade of the vital 21-mile Strait of Hormuz.

Responses remain cautious. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband indicates consideration of options like mine-hunting drones but prioritizes conflict resolution. Japanese officials set a “very high” bar for deploying warships to war zones. South Korea stays in review, avoiding direct confrontation risks.

With allies hesitant and Iran vowing a “prolonged energy shock,” the global economy hangs in the balance over this critical waterway.
