Men should promptly contact their general practitioner if they notice three specific warning signs during toilet visits. These indicators may signal early prostate cancer, a condition that often progresses silently for years before symptoms emerge.

Urgent Warning Signs to Watch For

Health authorities highlight three primary urinary symptoms that develop gradually:

  • An increased need to urinate, particularly at night.
  • Straining or difficulty while urinating.
  • A sensation that the bladder has not fully emptied.

These symptoms do not always indicate cancer, as other conditions can cause them. However, experts advise against ignoring them. The NHS emphasizes: “Prostate cancer often develops slowly, so there may be no symptoms for many years, but it’s important to know what to look out for. But if something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait – contact your GP practice. Early diagnosis can save lives.”1820

Higher Risk Groups

Individuals over 50, Black men, and those with a family history of prostate cancer face elevated risks. The disease typically originates in the prostate’s outer region, avoiding pressure on the urethra until it grows significantly or spreads.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

No national screening program exists in the UK, but a free PSA blood test through the NHS can detect issues before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis often leads to a cure. Treatments tailored to patients include surgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and others.

Additional symptoms may include lower back pain, unexplained weight loss, or erectile dysfunction.

Key Statistics

Cancer Research UK reports that one in six men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. About 78.9% of patients survive 10 years or more post-diagnosis, underscoring the value of early detection. No proven preventive measures exist, so consulting a GP is recommended even without symptoms.
