EE stands out as the leading mobile network in the UK, excelling in nationwide performance tests that compare the country’s four major providers: EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone. Even challenger brands rely on these networks, making coverage quality a key factor in choosing a provider.
EE Dominates All Key Categories
The State of the Mobile Union Report for the second half of 2025 reveals EE securing first place or tying for top spot in all eight nationwide categories. These include overall performance, reliability, responsiveness, speed, data, call and video quality, plus text messaging—where it shared honors with Three and O2.
“EE remained the leader in 2H 2025, winning or sharing every UK-wide RootScore during testing,” stated Luke Kehoe, analyst at Ookla. “In fact, EE has won our UK Overall RootScore Award outright in every test period since 2H 2013, earning recognition as the UK’s best network for over 12 years and counting. EE also posted the fastest UK-wide aggregate median download speed at 114.1 Mbps, more than double the next-fastest result (Three’s 53.8 Mbps).”
Technical Edge in Spectrum and 5G
EE’s superior results stem from its strategic spectrum maximisation—optimising frequencies for cellular signals. The network balances device capacity on masts with consistent coverage. Despite lacking the largest 5G spectrum blocks, EE delivers the highest median 5G download speeds and top reliability. Owned by BT, it builds effectively on its established 4G infrastructure for robust 5G service.
Comprehensive Testing Across the UK
Over 600,000 connection tests from all four operators occurred between July and December 2025. Evaluations covered peak and off-peak times, stationary and mobile scenarios like motorway driving, indoor and outdoor spots, good and poor coverage areas, and all UK nations.
Strong Performances from Rivals
Three claimed second place in most categories, excluding video, with average download speeds of 53.8 Mbps—ahead of O2 and Vodafone but trailing EE. O2 advanced significantly, ranking second in UK-wide reliability and urban speeds after placing fourth previously. Vodafone stays competitive in select regions despite fewer overall awards.
Choosing the Right Network
While EE leads these rankings, individual needs vary. Use online coverage checkers from providers to verify signal strength at home. Compare deals, including MVNOs like Giffgaff or Tesco Mobile, which use big-four infrastructure. These often offer flexible, cost-effective plans for those owning their devices, avoiding bundled smartphone financing.
